Purpose of the Korean Bell Garden (aka Bell of Peace and Harmony)

For over 100 years, Korean Americans have settled in Washington D.C, the capital of the United States of America. Unfortunately, despite the long history of settlements, no structures that represent Korea’s proud culture exist.

Washington D.C is not only the capital of the United States, but it is also the world center of politics and cultures. Creating a unique identity of Korea here plants the beauty of the Korean culture in the United States and preserves the Korean culture and history for future generations of Korean Americans so that they can be proud of their roots. Moreover, this is a chance for this generation’s Korean Americans to share the beauty and wonders of our culture with mainstream American society with the purpose of establishing peace and harmony throughout communities.

‘코리안 벨 가든’ (일명: 평화와 화합의 종) 건립 취지

한민족(Korean American)의 미국 이민 역사가 100년이 넘었음에도 불구하고 미국의 수도인 워싱톤(Washington) 지역에는 한민족의 우수한 문화유산의 조형물이 없었습니다.

미국의수도이며세계의 정치 중심지인 워싱톤에 한국의 고유문화를 만들어 한민족의 정체성을 심어주는 동시에 아름다운 한국인과 훌륭한 문화유산을 널리 알리고 기리기리 보존하면서 후세들에게도 자랑스런 민족임을 보여야 할 시점에 와있다 사료되었습니다. 더욱이 워싱톤에 거주하는 한인(Korean American)들은 타 민족에게도 우리 한민족의 문화 우수성을 알리며 화합의 계기를 만든 취지입니다.

Purpose of Project

For the first time in history, one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Washington, D.C, which is not only the capital of the United States but also the world’s political center, will hold the Korean Bell Garden. The Korean Bell Garden represents and shares the Korean culture and history, instilling identity and national pride in Korean American descendants living here in the United States. It is also a great cultural heritage that can be shared with other ethnic communities as an instrument of unity as well as symbol of exchanges and cooperation with all.

Also, 2010 marked the 60th anniversary of the unforgettable 6.25 Korean War that formed a friendship between Korea and United States. The completion of the Bell of Peace of Harmony celebrated and promoted everlasting peace and became a historical milestone to be commemorated always.

사업목적

미국의 수도이며 세계의 정치 중심지인 워싱톤지역에 미동부지역에서는 처음으로 가장 아름다운 식물공원에 한국문화와 역사를 알릴 수 있는 한국정원조성 (코리안 벨 가든)을 조성하여, 한민족의 정체성을 심어주는 동시에 자자손손 후손들에게도 자랑스러운 민족의 긍지를 심어주고 또한 훌륭한 문화 유산을 타민족들에 알리고 모범이 되어 타민족 사회와의 교류협력은 물론이고, 화합의 계기가 됩니다.

또한 2010년에는 잊혀질 수 없는 6.25 한국전쟁의 60주년을 맞이하는 뜻 깊은 해를 기념하여 한미 양국간의 우의증진의 상징으로 평화의 종각이 만들어짐으로써 역사적으로 길이 기념될 이정표가 될 것입니다.

Korean Bell Garden Proclamation

On the ninth day of June two thousand and seven, the undersigned gathered to recognize an agreement between the Korean American Cultural Committee (KACC) and the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority (NVRPA) to develop the first Korean Bell Garden in a public garden in the United States of America.

This Korean Bell Garden is a key feature of Meadowlark Botanical Gardens and provides a place of beauty and reflection for the public to enjoy.

In Korea, bell pavilions are used to mark places of great significance. This bell pavilion and surrounding garden marks Meadowlark Botanical Gardens as one of the premier public gardens in the United States and provides a place of cultural identity for over 200,000 Korean Americans living in Northern Virginia.

We, the undersigned, bore witness to the new partnership and the significant contribution it represented.

Description of the Korean Bell Garden Project

Located in the outskirts of Washington D.C., the center of Virginia is Fairfax County with a Korean population over 70%. The Korean Bell Garden is located at Meadowlark Botanical Garden (9750 Meadowlark Gardens Ct., Vienna, VA 22182), the only park in the Washington D.C Metropolitan Area with an entrance fee.

In July 2006, the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authorities for the Korean Bell Garden awarded a site for the Korean Bell Garden to be built. On April 18, 2007, KACC (Chairperson Jeung Hwa Elmejjad-Yi) and NVRPA (Chairman Bill Dickinson) signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the site that would become the Korean Bell Garden.
For this occasion, the Korean media as well as the American media, most notably the “Washington Post” was present to share this news with mainstream American society and to document the memorable event.
Professor David Chung of Michigan University, who was responsible for the design concept of the Korean Bell Garden, was also present and revealed the design to the public.

On November 11, 2007, a public viewing of the concept design was held and in the following year, on November 29, 2008, the concept landscape of the Meadowlark Gardens with the Korean Bell Garden was revealed. On this day, KACC was able to achieve the second fundraising goal through the donations made by the Koreans in the Washington D.C Metropolitan Area who donated approximately.250,000 stocks($150,000)Through theNOVA(Northern Virginia Regional Park Authorities) generous donation of 4.5 acres that is the site of the Korean Bell Garden today, the KACC was able to build a traditional bell pavilion with the hopes of accomplishing these goals: to share our culture with America, be recognized as Korean-Americans, and inspire the 1.5~2nd generations to feel ownership of the Korean culture. In addition, through this historical work, the KACC hoped to share our Korean culture with Americans and to create and build a foundation of unity between all the nationalities represented in the U.S. If everyone were to come together as one mind and heart, it would symbolize not only the joint immigration history in the U.S. but also the great American symbol of multiracial harmony.
Upon completion, the KACC representing the Korean American community, agreed to donate the Korean Bell Garden to park authorities, who would then be responsible for maintenance and management.

Finally, the Korean Bell Garden lies on a total of 4.5 acres of land, of which 1.6 acres holds the representative Bell of Peace and Harmony in the bell belfry that shows the theme of longevity, which can be seen throughout the garden. In order to preserve the characteristics of a traditional Korean garden, traditional Korean lamps can be seen upon entering the garden through the front gates. Pass the entryway, theJejuHarubang(volcanicRock)can be seen, as well as the Harmony Hall, the Flower Wall, the Wall of the Ten Symbols of Longevity, and the beautiful Turtle Fountain. Then, pass the stone walkway stands the grand Bell of Peace and Harmony, the centerpiece and pride of the Korean Bell Garden. Throughout the entire Korean Bell Garden, traditional Korean plants, such as the Korean national flower, the Rose of Sharon, and pine trees, are planted to enliven the entire garden and to add authenticity of a Korean traditional park to the garden. Also added are stone benches to rest on after walks along the garden.

버지니아주의 중심 카운티(County)는 워싱턴 근교에 있는 페어팩스 카운티(Fairfax County)입니다. 특히 이 지역에는 워싱톤지역 한인들의 70% 이상이 거주하고 있습니다. 그리고 ‘코리안벨가든’ 건립 부지인 ‘메도우락 식물공원”은 워싱톤 지역에서 유일하게 입장료가 있는 아름다운 [Meadowlark Botanical Garden Park] 공원이며 비엔나 (9750 Meadowlark Gardens Ct., Vienna, VA 22182)에 위치해 있습니다.

KACC는 2006년 7월 버지니아주 공원관리당국(NVRPA/Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority)으로부터 코리안 벨 가든 부지를 선정 받았고, 이듬해인 2007년 4월18일 코리안벨가든 부지에서 KACC(위원장 이정화)와 NVRPA(회장 빌 디킨슨)가 ‘조형물 건립승인 체결기념식’을 가졌습니다.
‘조형물 건립승인 체결기념식’에는 주요 한인 언론들은 물론이며 미주류사회의 언론인 ‘워싱턴포스트’ 등도 취재의 열을 올리며 이를 미 주류사회에 보도한 바 있습니다.
‘조형물 건립승인 체결기념식’에는 조형물 디자인을 담당한 데이빗 정(미시간대 교수)씨가 참석해 종과 종각 등 공원조성에 관한 디자인 컨셉을 참석자들에게 공개하기도 했습니다.

2007년 11월 11일에는 조감도 공개 관람이 있었고 이듬해 2008년 11월29일에 코리안벨가든 부지인 메도우락 가든에서 실물 조감도 관람식이 있었습니다. 당일 워싱턴 지역의 익명의 한인 사업가로 부터 주식25만주/$150,000상당의 기금을 전달 받음으로 현재 기금모금 상황은 2차 목표액을 달성했습니다.

KACC가 북버지니아 공원국으로부터 기증받은 부지 4.5에이커 자리에 한국의 전통 종각을 세워 ‘코리안 벨 가든’으로 조성하여 미국 속에 우리 문화를 보여주고 코리안 아메리칸으로서 인정받아 가며 동시에 1.5~2세들 역시 이를 통하여 주인의식을 고취시킬 수 있을 것으로 사료됩니다. 또한 이를 통하여 우리문화를 미국땅에서 ‘무’에서 ‘유’를 창조하는 역사적 사업의 시작으로 초석을 쌓는 일이기에 국.내외 동포들 모두가 한마음이 되어 동참한다면 우리의 상징물 자체가 바로 우리 민족의 위대한 이민역사의 결실일 뿐 아니라 미국의 다민족의 화합과 상징의 표본이 되리라 사료되었습니다.
한인사회를 주축으로 한 KACC가 조형물 건립을 완료한 후 조형물을 공원당국에 기증하는 형식을 갖추며공원당국이 보수 및 관리 등을 정부차원에서 하는 것으로 계약 체결되었습니다.

끝으로 ‘코리안벨가든’에 대해 말씀드리자면, 총 4.5에이커 부지에 잔디를 깔고, 그중 1.6에이커에는 십장생을 테마로 한 한국종각을 건립하고 종각 주변으로는 한국전통정원 컨셉의 특성을 살려서 전통기와 담장과 전통대문 (무궁화 문) 입구를 시작으로, 토종한국식물로 꾸며져있으며, 들어서면 한국의 정취를 느낄 수 있는 돌하르방, 장승등을 볼 수 있습니다. 중앙마당에 들어서면 중앙마당의 입구에는 신라의 석탑을 보게 되며 Harmony Hall(조화루)과 꽃담, 십장생담과 연못등을 거쳐서,건너 코리안벨가든의 중심인 평화의 종각으로 도착합니다. 그 주위로 한국국화인 무궁화를 비롯하여 소나무와 같은 한국토종 나무, 식물, 돌등이 조화를 이루게 되고, 특히 한글공원을 위시하여 거북공원등이 조성되었습니다. 그외에 공원주변을 산책한 후 쉴 수 있는 벤치가 마련되어 있습니다.

April 2009: Promoted Seok Hyung Kwon as the manager & completed Bell Pavilion Designedby Sampoong Architecture. 한국의 현장소장 권석형씨(LA 우정의 종각 신축현장 소장)를 선정하여 현재 한국에 있는 삼풍건설에서 한국 종각을 설계했음.

2009: Received approval from Fairfax County of construction plan. Fairfax County의 건축허가 승인획득.

2009: To receive support and cooperation of the Republic of Korea, members traveled toSouth Korea in April, July, and September; received promise of support. 대한민국의 협조를 받기 위해 4월, 7월, 10월 한국 세차례 방문한 결과 협조약속받음.

Fundraising Activities

Ms. Jeung Hwa Elmejjad-Yi, Chair of KACC, held a fundraising concert in spring 2005 and famous country singers well-known in the music industry Su Hee Kim and Mi Ja Lee were invited to perform. Also that spring, KACC collaborated with writers (seniors) and held a “Literary Night” and “Oriental Painting Exhibition” as fundraising events.

In addition, in April and October 2004, the KACC held golf tournaments. On August 9, 2007, fundraising campaign was spread through live-broadcast on AM 1310. In October 2007, KACC held another gold tournament and in November, an event revealing a bird’s-eye view of the planned landscape was held. In February 2008, a fundraising dinner was held at the Korean Embassy and in November, the map of the planned landscape was revealed to the public. On this particular day, for the first time in the Washington D.C Metropolitan Area, anonymous donors contributed $250,000.

KACC는 이정화 대표를 중심으로 2004년과2005년 봄에 본국 대중 가요계의 유명 가수인 김수희씨와 이미자씨를 초청하여 건립기금 모금을 위한 콘서트를 개최한바 있으며 또한 2005년 봄에는 워싱톤지역 원로 작가의 지원으로 ‘문학의 밤’ 행사와 아울러 ‘동양화 작품 전시회’를 개최한 바 있습니다.

이어 KACC는 2006년 4월과 10월에 기금모금 골프대회를 각각 개최한 바 있으며, 2007년 8월9일에 실시한 라디오(AM1310) 생방송 모금 운동, 10월에 골프대회를 통해 기금을 마련하였고, 11월에는 조감도 공개 관람을 개최하였습니다. 2008년 2월에는 주미한국대사관저에서 기금모금 만찬이 있었습니다. 11월에는 코리안 벨 가든이 세워질 버지나아 비엔나에 위치한 메도우락 가든에서 실물 조감도 관람식이 열렸습니다. 이날 워싱턴 지역에서는 처음으로 약25만달러의 모금이 익명의 기부자를 통해 들어왔습니다.
